Hertz Global Holdings (NASDAQ:HTZ) has revealed its selection of Gil West, former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) and General Motors (NYSE:GM) Cruise unit, as its incoming Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective April 1. West will succeed Stephen Scherr, who is set to step down on March 31.
Having joined DAL in 2008, West spent 12 years with the airline, eventually rising to the role of COO in 2014, overseeing its global operations. His stint with General Motors’ Cruise unit spanned from 2021 to 2023.
With extensive experience in operationally intensive sectors, particularly in transportation and travel, West is poised to lead Hertz through its current challenges and seize opportunities. With a global workforce of over 27,000 employees, HTZ aims to leverage West’s leadership to enhance customer service and generate shareholder value. The appointment underscores Hertz’s commitment to strategic initiatives aimed at technological advancement, strengthening commercial partnerships, and revitalizing its value brands.
West’s track record of successfully leading large teams and orchestrating operational turnarounds, notably during his tenure at Delta, instills confidence in his ability to guide Hertz toward sustained success.
West’s appointment arrives at a critical juncture for Hertz as it grapples with challenges such as heightened repair costs and subdued demand for electric vehicles. Year-to-date, HTZ shares have declined by 27.1%, outpacing the industry’s 7.7% decrease.
Drawing from his extensive experience, West is anticipated to navigate Hertz through its current difficulties. His strategic vision for the company’s future and his deep-rooted expertise in the transportation and mobility sectors could align seamlessly with HTZ’s objectives and contribute to its growth trajectory.
In summary, West’s appointment as CEO marks a significant milestone for Hertz as it steers through a period of transition. Backed by West’s leadership and ongoing company initiatives, Hertz is poised for long-term success in the ever-evolving automotive landscape.
