Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) has revealed its latest move by launching a web version of Threads, its newly introduced text-centric social media platform. This strategic step aims to retain its professional user base and establish a competitive advantage over its rival, X, formerly known as Twitter.
Users of Threads will now have the convenience of accessing the microblogging platform through their computer web browsers, as announced by the owner of Facebook and Instagram. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, shared in a Threads post that the web version’s availability would gradually extend to users “over the next few days.”
This anticipated launch holds the potential to significantly broaden Threads’ appeal among power users such as brands, corporate accounts, advertisers, and journalists. These entities can now harness the advantages of the platform on a larger screen, enhancing their experience and productivity.
Initially, Threads garnered immense attention, amassing over 100 million sign-ups within its first five days since its July 5 debut. However, this initial enthusiasm dwindled as users gradually returned to the more familiar X platform after the initial surge.
The Android version of the Threads app saw a noteworthy decline in daily active users, plummeting from its peak of 49.3 million to 10.3 million in slightly over a month. This data, reported on August 10 by the analytics platform Similarweb, underscores the shift in user engagement.
To enhance user experience and engagement, Meta plans to incorporate additional features into the web version of Threads in the forthcoming weeks.
