Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) will give users of its Azure Government cloud computing service, which includes several U.S. government departments, access to artificial intelligence large language models (LLMs) made by ChatGPT’s author, OpenAI.
Microsoft, an investor in the artificial intelligence (AI) firm OpenAI, has introduced GPT-4 and GPT-3 models to Azure Gov.
Who exactly will be using the LLMs remains unknown. Customers in the federal government include the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, and NASA.
Meanwhile, a Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) representative told Bloomberg News that the organization will look into the technology. DTIC is a branch of the Defense Department that collects military research.
This is the first time a major company has attempted to provide chatbot technology to the American government.
As of May, there were 4,500 users of Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service, and the business already sells OpenAI models to commercial clients.
Microsoft said in a blog post that GPT-4, GPT-3, and Embeddings are available to Azure Government users for a variety of purposes, including but not limited to content creation, summarization, semantic search, and natural language-to-code translation.
According to Bloomberg News, quoting a Microsoft official, customers of Azure Government would be unable to use ChatGPT in particular. The Azure OpenAI service is often where you can find ChatGPT.
Microsoft noted that the Azure OpenAI Service only transmits queries to the Azure OpenAI model in the production environment via an encrypted network; the queries are deleted after processing. OpenAI stated that no government data was utilized during model development or training.
Chinese tech giants, including Alibaba (BABA), SenseTime (OTCPK:SNTMF), and Baidu (BIDU), have all released their own generative AI services in the wake of ChatGPT’s debut. Recent research indicates that Chinese companies have started 79 LLMs over the last three years to improve their proficiency in artificial intelligence-related fields.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has recently become a hot topic, with several firms unveiling new AI-related efforts. Nvidia stock rode a wave of investor euphoria over artificial intelligence. It surpassed a $1 trillion market valuation in early June of this year.
